‘It totally would have hit him like a suckerpunch’: The Rock’s Relentless 15 Years of Hard Work to Bring Black Adam to DCU Getting Canceled in 1 Day Made Him and James Gunn Mortal Enemies?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has had a splendid career over the decades. Suffering from quite a few ups and downs, the actor has his moments to shine and moments to quiet down. The latter seems to be a choice that Dwayne Johnson made after making Black Adam and going up against DC’s newly appointed co-head James Gunn.

It seems that The Rock and James Gunn are at a crossroads with neither wanting to move and give the other space. Alleging that Gunn canceled Dwayne Johnson’s, Black Adam after The Rock spent 15 years for the movie, the two may just have become enemies.

Dwayne Johnson had been offered a spot in the DC Universe multiple times. Rejecting them all, The Rock wanted a special entry unrivaled by mortal actors. With 15 relentless years of hard work and convincing the higher-ups, Johnson finally released his magnum opus in 2022.

With a whopping $260 million budget (excluding the promotions), The Rock created one of the most hyped-up superhero movies only to be let down by the audience and critics. Hailed as an under-whelming performance and weak storyline, Black Adam felt like any other superhero movie. After an average box office collection and the new DCU lineup released, Dwayne Johnson shared a message with the people on the Internet.

The Rock took to his Twitter account and shared a statement wherein Black Adam was announced to leave the DCU for its initial chapter. Like Marvel has its Phases, DCU decided to release its line-ups chapter-wise. According to the man himself, Black Adam will not be a part of DC’s first chapter. As revealed in a YouTube video, James Gunn and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sat down for a chat and decided that it would be in the best interest of both parties to sit Black Adam out for the first chapter of the DCU. But not everything is what it seems.

It feels almost comical that Dwayne Johnson was supposed to lead the DCU into redemption after his Black Adam success. After bringing Henry Cavill back for the role of Superman, The Rock wanted nothing more than a universe that the people might someday enjoy and not wait for the story to develop slowly over the years.

It has been rumored that following the cancelation of Black Adam in the DCU, James Gunn, and Dwayne Johnson have got to clear the trouble between them. Since their alleged discourse, it will be tough for Black Adam to be included in future DCU projects which Gunn and The Rock have promised for now. Whatever the case, the people acknowledged that Black Adam by Dwayne Johnson was a unique approach to DC movies that some people liked while some did not.

Black Adam is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
